Ambergris Caye is Belize’s Top Tourist Destination and the largest island in the country. It is located on the northeast, bordering Mexico to the north. The island is well known for having the second largest Barrier Reef in the world and offers superb diving, fishing, snorkeling and boating experiences. Ambergris Caye is approximately 25 miles long with only one town (San Pedro Town). The island is easily accessible via 20 minute flight directly from the Philip Goldson International Airport or a 1.5 hour boat ride from the water taxi terminal in Belize City (35 miles).
Coral reefs provide a rich marine life and great snorkelling and diving sites. But for the most part, the water behind it is shallow and grassy. While there are a few great swimming beaches on the island, these are not the norm here. Residents and visitors tend to swim off docks in the deeper water away from the weeds.
There are plenty of activities to occupy your time: fishing, diving, boating, snorkelling, exploring, biking, bird watching, day tours to visit the Mayan ruins and rainforest. Or, if you prefer, just relax with a cold drink under your palapa. The evenings on the island are a social event. You will find tourists and islanders at different bars and restaurants listening to reggae and latin music and sharing the day's adventures.
Development on the island begins on the southern tip and extends north approximately 15 miles with the majority of the 20,000 residents residing in and around the town's core. San Pedro Town offers all the amenities you would expect on a tourist destination such as medical clinics, police station, fire Station, churches, grocery stores, hardware stores, marine supplies, restaurants, gift shops, specialty stores as well as tour operators and guide services for mainland and water based activities.
Utilities:
Residents and resorts use a variety of alternative sources including: wind and solar for electricity, rain catch and desalination for water, aerobic septic systems, satellite TV and internet. Boats, golf carts and bicycles have always been the main forms of transportation on the island, but over the past years we have seen more ATV’s, motorcycles and cars. How you get around will depend on where you are located on the island as well as your level of fitness.
